The Individual Oral is 30% of the assessment at SL and 20% at HL. What decides the mark is not how well the texts are known but whether the chosen global issue is genuinely shared by both of them.
A global issue that is too broad ("social justice") fits every text and, for exactly that reason, connects deeply to none. A narrow, text-specific formulation scores higher.
The HL Essay is for HL students only
The HL Essay is a 1,200-1,500 word independent literary analysis of one of the studied works and carries 20% of the HL assessment. It is not a general essay: it must be built around a focused research question.
