IB Biology SL Tutoring
One-to-one online preparation for the Biology Standard Level syllabus
Terminology is what most IB Biology SL students trip over: they understand the concept perfectly in their own language and then cannot produce it in English when the question asks. Ninety-minute sessions fix the vocabulary topic by topic, and we work separately on labelled-diagram questions and on controlling variables in the IA.
Quick Answer
Biology SL requests come mostly from students at English-medium schools, and since vocabulary work continues between lessons, taking a 20-lesson package at the start of the term pays off. We reserve three sessions for the IA. Lessons are 90 minutes, one to one.

About IB Biology SL Tutoring
Our IB Biology SL tutoring programme fully covers the Biology Standard Level syllabus, one of the core science courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We study living systems with a systematic, accessible approach. Our experienced IB teachers make biology concepts concrete with visual materials and real-world examples.
The course covers cell biology (cell structure, membranes), molecular biology (DNA, RNA, protein synthesis), genetics (Mendelian genetics, genetic engineering), ecology (populations, ecosystems), evolution and biodiversity, and human physiology. Each topic is supported with visual materials.
At SL the focus is on a solid understanding of core concepts. Rather than HL-specific advanced topics (advanced metabolism, plant biology, etc.), the core topics are studied in depth. Our teachers balance conceptual understanding with application skills.
Genetics has an important place at SL too. We systematically teach Mendelian genetics, Punnett squares, the fundamentals of genetic engineering and biotechnology applications, and develop the skills to solve genetics problems.
The Internal Assessment (IA) makes up 20% of the IB Biology SL grade. We provide support during the IA: choosing a research question, experimental design, data analysis, statistics and report writing.
Exam strategy carries particular weight. Different preparation techniques are applied for Paper 1 (multiple choice) and Paper 2 (structured questions). Past-paper practice and mark scheme analysis are done regularly.
Our service is fully individual to the student's current level and goals. Our programme plans together the content, problem solving and exam strategy a student needs for high goals.
IB assessment experience
Lessons are, wherever possible, planned with teachers who have relevant subject experience and a strong command of the IB assessment criteria. For some subjects we can offer lessons with teachers who have IB Examiner experience; matching is done based on subject, level and teacher availability.

About grade boundaries: According to the grade boundary documents the International Baccalaureate Organization publishes for each exam session, the total percentage needed for a 7 varies by subject, level and session in a band of roughly 55–85%. Your school's IB coordinator can access the relevant May/November Grade descriptors and boundaries document. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.
IA / Written-Task Support
Where do one-to-one lessons provide support on the Internal Assessment and written tasks?
An experiment that produces a difference in the time available
The most common accident in biology is living material that produces no measurable difference within the time you have. Before you start we work out whether the change you expect from seeds, yeast or an enzyme will fall inside your measuring range - at SL the lab window is usually narrower.
Enough repeats to cover the variability
Unlike physics and chemistry, two identical samples here behave differently. Three repeats will not cover biological variability; we decide how many you need by looking at the spread you expect.
How the controlled variables were controlled
Temperature, pH and light are the hardest variables to hold steady in a biology experiment. Writing that they were kept constant is not enough - you need to say by what method and how well. We go through them one by one while the method is written.
Justifying the statistical test
Running a test earns nothing on its own; you have to write why you chose it and how your data meets its assumptions. We choose the test as soon as the collection method is fixed.
The lab calendar and drafts
Your school decides when you can run the experiment. We finish the design before then so the lab time goes on taking readings. We read separately at the choice of experiment, the raw data and the full report; we do not write it for you.

Study Plan Framework
A typical 4-phase structure for IB Biology SL Tutoring in one-to-one lessons; adapted to the student's exam date.
Locating the loss
week 1
- Separating whether marks went on subject knowledge or on how the answer was written
- Measuring with sample answers written to each command term
- The weighting of the programme follows from that
Building recall you can use
weeks 2-9
- Turning heavy-memorisation topics into something retrievable under exam conditions
- The cell biology, genetics and ecology core
- Closed-book retrieval after every session
Scientific Investigation
5-6 weeks, set by your school's lab calendar
- Choosing an investigation that yields a measurable difference
- Settling the number of repeats and the statistical test
- Rounds of draft feedback
Answer-writing technique
the 6 weeks before the exam
- Answer length and content by command term
- The data-based questions of Paper 1B
- Comparing extended responses against the mark scheme
Full rehearsal
the last 3 weeks
- Full-length past papers under timed conditions
- A final check on the command-term mistakes that keep recurring
This framework is a sample plan; it is customised for each student based on exam date, target grade and current level.
How One-to-One Lessons Work
The general structure of IB Biology SL Tutoring sessions
We build the answer around the command term
This is where most marks go in biology: answering a question that asks you to outline with a full explanation earns nothing extra and costs time. We work through how long each command term's answer should be and what it needs to contain.
Turning memorisation into recall
The difficulty here is not understanding the content but retrieving it in the exam. Instead of rereading topics we run closed-book retrieval - what you cannot recall is what needs revising.
At SL the scope is narrower and the detail deeper
SL students working from HL resources spend time on detail that is not on their syllabus. We mark from the start which sub-topics are not assessed at SL, and the time saved goes into answer-writing practice.
A written progress report every two weeks
We share which topics were covered, what stage the report is at and what comes next, in writing.
