Read the command term before drafting your answer. A 'state' question calls for a brief, specific answer. 'Outline' asks for a short account, while 'explain' requires the reasons or causes behind a process. For 'discuss', consider relevant arguments or factors and support your conclusions with evidence. Match the response to the task rather than using the same paragraph for every question on a topic.

In a lesson, we can compare an attempted answer with the question and identify what is missing. For a transport process, an explanation should make clear what moves, where it moves and which features allow the movement. Try explaining it without notes, check the links against a diagram, then rewrite the unclear step. A question using a different example helps you check whether you can apply the reasoning independently.

First identify the variables, units and comparisons in a table or graph. State the pattern using evidence from the data, then distinguish that observation from the explanation you propose. A difference between two groups does not by itself establish the biological mechanism responsible for it.

For example, if an experiment shows a lower enzyme reaction rate under one condition, the result needs to be considered alongside the method and controlled variables. Avoid naming a cause before checking what changed and what was measured. Your tutor can help you separate an answer describing the evidence from an answer explaining it, and decide which one the question requests.

The Biology scientific investigation contributes 20% of the final grade. Begin with a focused question and a method that can produce evidence relevant to it. The quantity of data should suit the investigation: choose the range of conditions and the number of observations or repeats by considering the question, the variability you expect and the analysis you plan to use. Explain why those choices are appropriate.

In tutoring, we can discuss whether your comparison is measurable, which conditions need controlling and how your analysis connects to the biological process you are investigating. Make each conclusion traceable to your data, and distinguish what the evidence shows from the explanation you propose. When discussing a limitation, explain its effect on the results and suggest an improvement that addresses that specific weakness.
