IB Biology HL Tutoring
One-to-one online preparation for the Biology Higher Level syllabus
IB Biology HL asks you to hold a great deal of content, so we restructure it into something you will recall under pressure. The real losses come from command terms - an essay-length answer to a question that said outline earns nothing extra. Our 90-minute lessons train you to answer the verb, and the IA work starts from picking a measurable variable.
Quick Answer
Most Biology HL students intensify before the mocks, but the syllabus is large enough that those who settle into a weekly rhythm early in IB 2 feel far less squeezed. We set aside three or four sessions purely for the IA. If the first 90-minute lesson disappoints, we refund it.

About IB Biology HL Tutoring
Our IB Biology HL tutoring programme fully covers the Biology Higher Level syllabus, one of the most detailed and engaging science courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We study living systems from the molecular level to the ecosystem scale with a systematic, holistic approach. Our experienced IB teachers make complex biological processes clear with visual materials, animations and real-world examples.
The core topics span all levels of life. In cell biology we cover cell structure (prokaryotic and eukaryotic), membrane structure and function (the fluid mosaic model, diffusion, osmosis, active transport), cell division (mitosis and meiosis), organelle functions and cell metabolism in depth. We use microscope images, diagrams and 3D models to help cell topics be understood visually.
Molecular biology and genetics are cornerstones of the IB Biology HL syllabus. We systematically cover DNA structure and replication, transcription and translation, regulation of gene expression, Mendelian genetics (monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, linked genes), genetic engineering (PCR, gel electrophoresis, gene cloning, CRISPR) and biotechnology applications. Our teachers teach step-by-step techniques for solving genetics problems.
Evolution and biodiversity provide the historical and ecological context of the living world. We cover the mechanism of natural selection, speciation processes (allopatric and sympatric), phylogenetics and classification, cladograms, and the concepts of homology and analogy in depth. Within ecology we cover population dynamics, community ecology, ecosystem structure, energy flow, food webs and biogeochemical cycles.
HL-specific advanced topics are the critical sections that distinguish IB Biology HL from SL. We cover nucleic acids (the details of DNA replication, telomeres, repair mechanisms), metabolism (the detailed biochemistry of cellular respiration - glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, the electron transport chain; the light and dark reactions of photosynthesis), plant biology (the structure and function of xylem and phloem, plant hormones, tropisms) and advanced genetics (the gene pool, the Hardy-Weinberg principle, genetic drift, gene flow) in depth.
Human physiology is an important component of the IB Biology HL syllabus and is especially valuable for students targeting medicine. We cover the digestive system (enzymes, absorption), the circulatory system (heart structure and function, blood pressure regulation), the immune system (innate and acquired immunity, vaccines, antibodies), the nervous system (neurons, synaptic transmission, the central and peripheral nervous systems), the endocrine system (hormones, feedback mechanisms) and the reproductive system.
The Internal Assessment (IA) project makes up 20% of the IB Biology HL grade and is an important piece of work in which students demonstrate their scientific investigation skills. We work with you at every stage of the IA: choosing a research question, forming a hypothesis, defining dependent and independent variables, experimental design, data collection and processing, statistical analysis (t-test, chi-square test, correlation), graphing and scientific report writing. Our experienced teachers teach the strategies needed for top marks.
Our service is fully individual to the student's level, interests and university goals. A strong Biology HL grade is critical for students targeting careers in medicine, veterinary science, biology, biochemistry, genetics or environmental science. Our programme plans together the content, problem solving and exam strategy a student needs for high goals.
IB assessment experience
Lessons are, wherever possible, planned with teachers who have relevant subject experience and a strong command of the IB assessment criteria. For some subjects we can offer lessons with teachers who have IB Examiner experience; matching is done based on subject, level and teacher availability.

About grade boundaries: According to the grade boundary documents the International Baccalaureate Organization publishes for each exam session, the total percentage needed for a 7 varies by subject, level and session in a band of roughly 55–85%. Your school's IB coordinator can access the relevant May/November Grade descriptors and boundaries document. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.
IA / Written-Task Support
Where do one-to-one lessons provide support on the Internal Assessment and written tasks?
An investigation that will actually produce data
The most common accident in biology is living material that produces no measurable difference in the time you have. Before you start, we work out whether the change you expect from your seeds, yeast or enzyme will even fall inside the range your equipment can read.
Enough repeats to cover the variability
Unlike physics, two identical samples here behave differently. Three repeats will not cover biological variability; we decide how many you need by looking at the spread you expect.
Justifying the statistical test
Running a t-test or a chi-square earns nothing on its own. You have to write why you chose that test and how your data meets its assumptions. We build that justification before the test is chosen.
How the controlled variables were controlled
Temperature, pH and light are the hardest variables to hold steady in a biology experiment. Writing that they were kept constant is not enough - you need to say by what method and how well.
Feedback on drafts
We give feedback separately on the choice of investigation, the raw data and the full report. We do not write the report for you; IB academic honesty forbids it.

Study Plan Framework
A typical 4-phase structure for IB Biology HL Tutoring in one-to-one lessons; adapted to the student's exam date.
Locating the loss
weeks 1-2
- We separate whether marks went on subject knowledge or on how the answer was written
- Measuring with sample answers written to each command term
- The weighting of the programme follows from that
Building recall you can use
weeks 3-9
- Turning the heavy-memorisation topics into something retrievable under exam conditions
- Extra sessions on HL-only material
- Retrieval practice after every session
Scientific Investigation
6-8 weeks, set by your school's IA calendar
- Choosing an investigation that yields a measurable difference
- Settling the number of repeats and the statistical test
- Rounds of draft feedback
Answer-writing technique
the 8 weeks before the exam
- Answer length and content by command term
- Data-based questions on Paper 1B
- Comparing extended responses against the mark scheme line by line
Full rehearsal
the last 3 weeks
- Full-length past papers under timed conditions
- A final check on the command-term mistakes that keep recurring
This framework is a sample plan; it is customised for each student based on exam date, target grade and current level.
How One-to-One Lessons Work
The general structure of IB Biology HL Tutoring sessions
We build the answer around the command term
This is where most marks go in biology: answering a question that asks you to outline with an explanation earns nothing extra and costs time. We work through how long each command term's answer should be and what it needs to contain.
Turning memorisation into recall
The difficulty in this subject is not understanding the content but retrieving it in the exam. Instead of rereading topics we run closed-book retrieval - what you cannot recall is what needs revising.
Extended responses against the mark scheme, line by line
We put your own answer next to the mark scheme and mark which line earned which point. Seeing where the marks are actually awarded usually ends a repeated mistake in a single session.
A written progress report every two weeks
We share what was covered, what stage the IA is at and what comes next, in writing.
