About IB Extended Essay Tutoring
Our IB Extended Essay tutoring programme fully covers the Extended Essay process, one of the core components of the IB Diploma Programme. We develop independent research and academic writing skills with a systematic approach. Our experienced IB teachers guide you to successfully complete this challenging 4000-word project.
Choosing the topic and research question is critically important. We provide support in selecting a topic suited to your interests and strengths and forming a researchable, focused research question. Our teachers share successful EE examples from different disciplines.
Research methodology forms the foundation of the EE. We teach the identification of primary and secondary sources, reliability evaluation, note-taking techniques and citation and referencing formats (MLA, APA, Chicago). We also provide guidance on academic integrity and avoiding plagiarism.
Academic writing skills are the key to a high score. We systematically cover essay structuring (introduction, body, conclusion), argument development, use of evidence, academic language and tone, transitions and flow. Detailed feedback is given on drafts.
The assessment criteria are the main factors determining the EE grade. We teach strategies for each criterion (Focus and Method, Knowledge and Understanding, Critical Thinking, Presentation, Engagement). Our teachers assess from the IB examiner's perspective.
Reflection sessions and the RPPF (Reflection on Planning and Progress Form) are important components of the EE process. We provide support in preparing for the three mandatory reflection sessions and writing an effective RPPF.
Our service is fully individual to the student's chosen topic and discipline. The Extended Essay, together with TOK, can contribute up to 3 points to the IB Diploma score. Our programme develops the academic skills needed for the student's high-score goal through a plan we set with you.
IB assessment experience
Lessons are, wherever possible, planned with teachers who have relevant subject experience and a strong command of the IB assessment criteria. For some subjects we can offer lessons with teachers who have IB Examiner experience; matching is done based on subject, level and teacher availability.

About grade boundaries: According to the grade boundary documents the International Baccalaureate Organization publishes for each exam session, the total percentage needed for a 7 varies by subject, level and session in a band of roughly 55–85%. Your school's IB coordinator can access the relevant May/November Grade descriptors and boundaries document. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.

At which stages of the process do one-to-one lessons help?
The question has to fit 4,000 words
The usual accident is setting off with a broad question and finding, a few weeks before submission, that nothing has been proved. We pull the question to a width where one argument can be carried all the way. This is done in the first two sessions and shortens everything that follows.
Your subject's own rules
What an EE must do changes by subject: History does not allow topics from the recent past, the sciences expect you to generate your own data, the languages restrict which texts you may work on. Before the topic is fixed we read your subject's rules together.
Sources you can actually reach
A question resting on an archive you cannot enter, or a paywalled database, stays stuck until the deadline. So the source search comes before the topic is settled; we do not fix the question until we can see what you have in hand.
The RPPF and three reflection sessions
The reflection form is marked separately and reads hollow when written all at once in the final week. After each meeting we have you write what changed that week and why, so at submission there is a real record of the process.
The text is your own work
In 60-minute sessions we read drafts and work on structure and the flow of the argument. We do not write it for you - IB academic honesty forbids it, and in the reflection sessions your supervisor will ask you about the text.

How One-to-One Lessons Work
The general structure of IB Extended Essay Tutoring sessions
No writing until the question narrows
Most of the time lost on an Extended Essay goes into sections written under a broad question and then rebuilt. So the first sessions are about the question, not the text. Students are usually impatient to start writing; we hold the order anyway.
Sources first, topic second
Whether a topic can be written at all is decided by which sources you can get hold of. Fixing the topic and then looking for material ends in a question resting on things you cannot reach. We reverse the order.
You write the text
In the sessions we work on structure, argument and the use of sources; the sentences are yours. This is not only about academic honesty: in the reflection sessions your supervisor asks you about the decisions behind the text.
A written progress report every two weeks
