IB Tutoring FAQ: HL/SL, IA, EE and TOK

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the IB Diploma Programme, the IB tutoring process, pricing and our IA / EE / TOK support services.

General IB Diploma Programme

What is the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP)?
The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year international high-school programme for students aged 16 to 19. Students take a subject from each of the six subject groups (usually three at HL and three at SL) and also complete the three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and creativity, activity, service (CAS). The total score is out of 45.
What is the difference between IB HL and SL?
Higher Level (HL) subjects cover more content in greater depth and need more teaching hours than SL. In university applications, the HL subjects usually carry the most weight for the chosen field of study. Students typically take three subjects at HL and three at SL.
How is the IB score calculated?
Each subject is graded from 1 to 7 (6 subjects × 7 = 42 points), and TOK and the EE together add up to 3 more points. CAS earns no points but must be completed for the diploma. The maximum is 45 points, and 24 is the minimum for the diploma.
What is the Internal Assessment (IA)?
The Internal Assessment is the coursework component of each IB subject: it is marked by the student's teacher and moderated externally by the IB. In most subjects it makes up 20-30% of the final grade, and the format differs from subject to subject (a lab report, an essay, a mathematical exploration or a research project, for example).

Teaching Team and Matching

Who are your teachers?
Our tutors are experienced IB Diploma Programme teachers who currently work in IB schools. That is why we cannot share their full surnames; every tutor is listed subject by subject on the tutors page with a first name, the initial of the surname, their subject and their IB experience.
Does one teacher cover several subjects?
No. Each tutor teaches only their own subject. Mathematics is the single exception: our maths team teaches both the AA and AI syllabuses, at both HL and SL.
Do the teachers know the IB assessment criteria?
Yes. They know the IB assessment criteria, the IA / EE rubrics and the exam format for the subject they teach, and in past-paper work they read the mark scheme as marking logic rather than an answer key.
How do you match tutors to students?
Matching takes into account the subject, level (HL/SL), the student's needs (help with topics, exam preparation, IA / EE / TOK guidance), target score and the teacher's availability. We go through these together on the free intro call, and you may change tutor within your first 2 lessons.

IB Tutoring Process

How does IB tutoring start?
First, you tell us the subject, level (HL/SL) and goal through the contact form or WhatsApp. We then hold a free intro call, talk through the goal, the exam timeline and the student's available times, and draw up a lesson schedule.
Are lessons held online?
Yes, all of our lessons are held entirely online via our own custom-built tutoring platform. Lessons use screen sharing, a digital whiteboard, simulations and visualisation tools, and we offer lesson times for time zones across Turkey, Europe, the US and Asia.
How long does a lesson last?
The standard lesson duration is 90 minutes. For students who prefer an intensive programme, 120-minute sessions can also be arranged.
Which subjects do you support?
We offer support in 18 IB subjects, each at both HL and SL (36 HL/SL courses in all): Mathematics (AA & AI), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, ESS, Computer Science, Economics, Business Management, Psychology, Global Politics, Geography, History, Philosophy, English A & B, Turkish A and Visual Arts.
Can I get help with the IA, EE and TOK?
Yes. For the Internal Assessment we provide support with topic selection, research question, data collection, analysis and report writing. We provide the same planning, draft review and feedback for the Extended Essay and the TOK essay.
How is progress tracked after each lesson?
At the end of every lesson the teacher records a short lesson note covering the topics worked on, the question types practised and any gaps identified. The next lesson starts from those notes, so progress and the areas needing review are visible lesson by lesson. As the exams approach, we check progress regularly using past-paper scores and topic-by-topic mastery. Parents who ask for it receive regular updates.

Pricing and Payment

How much does IB tutoring cost?
A 90-minute one-to-one lesson costs €89. The 10-lesson package is discounted to €865 and the 20-lesson package to €1,694. Current prices, including group IB course prices, are on our pricing page.
How do I pay?
Payments are taken securely by card through Stripe. Bank transfer is also available.
How does your refund policy work?
Not happy after your first lesson? Full refund. You can cancel a lesson package at any time. Lessons already given are charged at the single-lesson price and the rest is refunded. The first-lesson guarantee applies on top. The full terms are on our refund policy page.

IA Grader (AI)

What is the IA Grader?
The IA Grader is a free tool that uses AI to analyse your IB Internal Assessment report against the IB assessment criteria. You upload a file in PDF or DOCX format and receive a criterion-based score estimate and feedback.
Do the AI results replace the real IB grade?
No. The AI analysis is only an estimated evaluation. Your IA is marked by your teacher at school and moderated externally by the IB. The AI tool is designed to help you see the strengths and areas for improvement in your report.
Is there a daily usage limit for the tool?
Yes: one free analysis per IP address per day. For unlimited, personalised feedback you can work with one of our tutors.
