About IB English A HL Tutoring
Our IB English A HL tutoring programme fully covers the English A Higher Level syllabus, one of the most comprehensive language and literature courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We develop all language competencies systematically, from literary analysis skills to academic writing. Our experienced IB teachers take critical thinking and text interpretation skills to the highest level.
The Language and Literature option covers both literary texts and non-literary texts (advertisements, speeches, articles, blogs). Language analysis (rhetorical devices, persuasion techniques, the relationship between language and identity), text types and purposes, mass media and media literacy, and literary works (poetry, novel, drama) and their contextual analysis are studied in depth. Different analysis techniques are taught for each text type.
The Literature option focuses entirely on literary works. We study poetry analysis (verse forms, sound features, imagery, symbolism), novel analysis (narrative techniques, character development, theme, motif), drama analysis (staging techniques, dialogue, conflict) and comparative literature. Works from different periods, cultures and genres are examined to build a broad literary perspective.
Higher Level-specific requirements distinguish IB English A HL from SL. For HL students we additionally cover the Higher Level Essay (1200-1500 words), the study of more literary works (at least 6) and deeper analysis expectations. Our teachers teach critical analysis and argumentation techniques at the HL level.
Paper 1 (Guided Literary Analysis) preparation is a critical component. The skill of writing a literary analysis on an unseen text is developed. Identifying the text type, recognising literary devices (imagery, symbolism, tone, structure), forming a thesis and supporting the argument are taught systematically. With plenty of practice, analysis writing speed and quality are improved.
In Paper 2 (Comparative Essay) preparation students learn to analyse two works comparatively. We develop comparison techniques (theme, character, narrative techniques, context), essay structuring (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion) and academic argumentation. Mark scheme analysis is used to teach IB examiner expectations.
The Individual Oral (IO) and the Higher Level Essay are important components of the IB English A HL grade. For the IO we work on extract selection, identifying the global issue, structuring the presentation and Q&A preparation. For the HL Essay we teach topic selection, research method, argument development and academic writing. Our experienced IB teachers know the assessment criteria from the inside.
Our service is fully personalised to the student's current language level, literary interests and university goals. A strong English A HL grade is critical for students targeting careers in English literature, journalism, communication, law or international relations. Our programme develops the academic skills suited to a student's goals with a personalised plan.

About grade boundaries: IB grade boundary ranges vary noticeably by subject, level and exam session. In some subjects the proportion needed for a 7 can range between 55–85%, so the current May/November session boundary documents should be checked separately. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.
