IB Chemistry SL Tutoring
One-to-one online preparation for the Chemistry Standard Level syllabus
Almost every IB Chemistry SL student stalls in the same place: the mole and the stoichiometry that follows from it. Until that lands, thermodynamics and equilibrium never make sense, so our 90-minute sessions secure the calculation side first and only then move on to error analysis in the practical report.
Quick Answer
There is little point moving on before the core calculation skills are secure, so the first four or five Chemistry SL sessions go there; most students then ease the pace. Two separate lessons are usually enough for the practical report. Lessons are 90 minutes and online.

About IB Chemistry SL Tutoring
Our IB Chemistry SL tutoring programme fully covers the Chemistry Standard Level syllabus, one of the core science courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We study the structure and behaviour of matter with a systematic, accessible approach. Our experienced IB teachers make abstract chemistry concepts concrete with visual materials and molecular models.
The course covers atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic), stoichiometry, thermodynamics (enthalpy), kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and the fundamentals of organic chemistry. Each topic is supported with mathematical calculations.
At SL the focus is on a solid understanding of core concepts and carrying out chemical calculations correctly. Rather than HL-specific advanced topics (biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, etc.), the core topics are studied in depth. Our teachers balance conceptual understanding with problem-solving skills.
Organic chemistry has an important place at SL too. We systematically teach the naming of organic compounds, functional groups and basic reaction types. While organic mechanisms are not as detailed as at HL, a solid basic understanding is established.
The Internal Assessment (IA) makes up 20% of the IB Chemistry SL grade. We provide support during the IA: choosing a research question, experimental design, data analysis, error calculations and report writing.
Exam strategy carries particular weight. Different preparation techniques are applied for Paper 1 (multiple choice) and Paper 2 (structured questions). Past-paper practice and mark scheme analysis are done regularly.
Our service is fully individual to the student's current level and goals. Our programme plans together the content, problem solving and exam strategy a student needs for high goals.
IB assessment experience
Lessons are, wherever possible, planned with teachers who have relevant subject experience and a strong command of the IB assessment criteria. For some subjects we can offer lessons with teachers who have IB Examiner experience; matching is done based on subject, level and teacher availability.

About grade boundaries: According to the grade boundary documents the International Baccalaureate Organization publishes for each exam session, the total percentage needed for a 7 varies by subject, level and session in a band of roughly 55–85%. Your school's IB coordinator can access the relevant May/November Grade descriptors and boundaries document. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.
IA / Written-Task Support
Where do one-to-one lessons provide support on the Internal Assessment and written tasks?
Not a copy of the class practical
Repeating the standard experiment from class looks like the safe route, but it earns nothing on the criteria that ask for the investigation to be yours. Taking a known method and changing one variable to suit your own question keeps it acceptable in the lab and still defensible.
Uncertainty written as a number
'Human error' earns nothing. You have to state the uncertainty of every instrument you used and show how it carries through to the result. This is where SL reports lose the most marks, so we build the calculation before the experiment runs.
Enough data points
At least five values of the independent variable, with repeats at each. A trend drawn through three points cannot be defended. We decide how many readings to take by looking at the lab time you will actually have.
Comparing the result against a known value
Comparing your figure with the literature value is not enough on its own; you have to show which step of the method the deviation came from. This is the section that earns marks even when the experiment went badly.
Your school's lab calendar
When you can run the experiment belongs to your school, and there is usually only one window. We finish the design before that day so the lab time goes on taking readings. We do not write the report for you; IB academic honesty does not allow that.

Study Plan Framework
A typical 4-phase structure for IB Chemistry SL Tutoring in one-to-one lessons; adapted to the student's exam date.
Moles and stoichiometry
weeks 1-4
- Settling the mole concept and unit conversions
- Limiting reagent, yield and concentration calculations
- We do not move on until this section is finished
Bonding and structure
weeks 5-8
- Telling the ionic, covalent and metallic models apart
- Justifying periodic trends rather than memorising them
- Recognising organic functional groups
Reactivity
weeks 9-13
- Enthalpy and energy cycles
- Rate of reaction and equilibrium
- Proton and electron transfer
Scientific Investigation
5-6 weeks, set by your school's lab calendar
- Building a question that departs from the class practical
- Writing the uncertainty calculation before the experiment
- Rounds of draft feedback
Exam practice
the 6 weeks before the exam
- Talking through the distractors on Paper 1A
- The data-based questions of Paper 1B
- Full-length past papers under timed conditions
This framework is a sample plan; it is customised for each student based on exam date, target grade and current level.
How One-to-One Lessons Work
The general structure of IB Chemistry SL Tutoring sessions
Calculations first, concepts after
Almost every Chemistry SL student stalls in the same place: the mole. Until that foundation is solid, equilibrium and enthalpy look like arbitrary rules. So the first four or five sessions go on calculations, and we hold that order even when a student pushes to skip ahead because the exam feels close.
On multiple choice we work on the distractors
The wrong options in Paper 1A are not random; they are built from known misconceptions. Finding the right answer is not enough - a student who can say why the other three were tempting does not fall for the same trap twice. So we discuss questions across all four options.
Uncertainty is written before the report
Treated as a section added after the data is collected, the uncertainty analysis always comes out thin. We have you write which instrument contributes which uncertainty while the experiment is still being designed - and then the number of readings follows from it.
A written progress report every two weeks
We share which topics were covered, what stage the report is at and what comes next, in writing.
