IB Business Management HL Tutoring

One-to-one online preparation for the Business Management Higher Level syllabus

IB Business Management HL tutoring is built around the pre-released case study for Paper 1: everyone has the text months in advance, so the difference comes from how well you know that company. We take the case apart tool by tool in 90-minute lessons, and work separately on the quantitative questions in Paper 2 and on the IA's research question.

Quick Answer

The workload in Business Management HL jumps the moment the Paper 1 case study is released; students who move to two 90-minute sessions a week from that point genuinely master the company. The IA research question needs settling earlier, towards the end of IB 1.

About IB Business Management HL Tutoring

Our IB Business Management HL tutoring programme fully covers the Business Management Higher Level syllabus, one of the most practical and applied courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We examine the dynamics of the business world from theory to practice with a systematic approach. Our experienced IB teachers make business concepts concrete with real company examples and current case studies.

The 'business organisation and environment' topic looks at how businesses are founded, grow and are affected by external environmental factors. Types of business (sole trader, partnership, corporation), stakeholders and conflicts of interest, analytical tools such as SWOT, STEEPLE and Porter's Five Forces, growth strategies and globalisation are studied in depth. Every concept is reinforced with real company examples.

Human resource management is an important component of the Business Management syllabus. We cover motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, Taylor, Pink), leadership styles, organisational structures, recruitment and training, performance appraisal and change management. Our teachers make HR topics concrete with case studies.

Finance and accounts is a critical topic studied in depth at HL. We in detail cover financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement), ratio analysis (liquidity, profitability, efficiency ratios), break-even analysis, investment appraisal techniques (payback, ARR, NPV) and budgeting, developing financial calculation and interpretation skills.

Marketing is the basis of customer-focused business strategy. We systematically cover the marketing mix (4P/7P), market research and segmentation, targeting and positioning, the product life cycle, pricing strategies, distribution channels and promotion techniques. Digital marketing and social media strategies are also examined with current examples.

Operations management addresses the efficiency of producing goods and services. We cover production methods (job, batch, flow, mass customisation), quality management (TQM, kaizen, benchmarking), stock management, supply chain management and project management (Gantt charts, critical path analysis). For HL students we also teach decision trees and simulation techniques.

The Internal Assessment (IA) is a research project making up 25% of the Business Management grade. We provide support at every stage: choosing a research question, selecting a real business, collecting primary and secondary data, applying analytical tools and writing the report. Our experienced IB teachers know the assessment criteria from the inside and teach high-scoring strategies.

Our service is fully individual to the student's career goals. A strong Business Management HL grade is critical for students targeting university programmes in business, economics, marketing, finance or entrepreneurship. Our programme develops the academic skills suited to a student's goals with a plan we set with you.

IB assessment experience

Lessons are, wherever possible, planned with teachers who have relevant subject experience and a strong command of the IB assessment criteria. For some subjects we can offer lessons with teachers who have IB Examiner experience; matching is done based on subject, level and teacher availability.

About grade boundaries: According to the grade boundary documents the International Baccalaureate Organization publishes for each exam session, the total percentage needed for a 7 varies by subject, level and session in a band of roughly 55–85%. Your school's IB coordinator can access the relevant May/November Grade descriptors and boundaries document. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.

IA / Written-Task Support

Where do one-to-one lessons provide support on the Internal Assessment and written tasks?

1

A real business and real access

The research is built on a real problem at a real business, and you have to be able to get data from it. The difference between a large company you can only follow from outside and a small business you can actually interview decides whether the project can be written. We settle that in the first sessions.

2

A question that ends in a decision

A good research question does not describe a situation; it makes you choose between options. A report written from a descriptive question has nothing to stand on when it reaches the recommendation. We frame the question so it ends in a justified recommendation.

3

Justifying the tools

Applying a SWOT or a break-even analysis earns nothing by itself. You have to write why you chose that tool and what it cannot see in this particular case. We decide which tools to use before data is collected, so the data fits them.

4

Planning the primary data

If there is a survey or an interview, its questions have to serve the research question. Data that turns out to be useless after collection does not come back. We build the question sheet by writing down which finding will be used in which section.

5

The school calendar and drafts

Topic approval and deadlines belong to your school, which is why we settle the research question before IB 1 ends. We read once at the question-and-method stage and once on the full text. We do not write the report for you.

Comparing Preparation Paths

The differences between self-study, group classes and one-to-one support for IB Business Management HL Tutoring

Preparation pathProsLimitationsBest for?
Working on your own
  • The concepts are familiar from everyday life; reading gets you a long way
  • The case study is released to everyone at the same time
  • Reading the case and analysing it tool by tool are different things, and the second is hard to reach alone
  • On quantitative questions the arithmetic can be right and you still cannot see that the interpretation is missing
  • How to arrange access to data from a real business is not written in any textbook
Students who read consistently and are comfortable with the calculations.
School lessons and group courses
  • Topics follow a timetable
  • The case study is read and discussed as a class
  • Everyone's case analysis cannot be read individually
  • The businesses chosen for the IA start to look alike across the class
  • Time for the HL-only decision tools stays limited
Students meeting the syllabus for the first time.
One-to-one online lessons with us
  • We read the case separately through each analytical tool, pulling different questions from the same text
  • Every calculation gets a sentence of interpretation beside it
  • The IA research question is settled before IB 1 ends
  • Costs more than studying alone
  • You arrange access to the business; we cannot set up the company interview
  • Until the case study is released there is only so much Paper 1 work to do
Students who know the theory but lose marks on case questions and the IA.

This framework is a sample plan; it is customised for each student based on exam date, target grade and current level.

How One-to-One Lessons Work

The general structure of IB Business Management HL Tutoring sessions

Reading the case is not analysing it

Everyone has the Paper 1 case months in advance. The difference is not how many times you read it but how many different tools you can pull a question through it with. In sessions we read the case through a different tool each time; the same paragraph answers a different question.

A calculation without interpretation is an unfinished answer

Reaching the right figure on a quantitative question earns part of the mark. The rest is writing what that number means for the business and which decision it supports. We have you write a sentence of interpretation under every calculation.

Paper 1 cannot be revised before the case is released

The company and sector change every year, and nothing about the content can be prepared in advance. We say so upfront. Until then the aim is to finish the topics and the tools; when the case appears the pace goes up.

A written progress report every two weeks

We share which topics were covered, what stage the research is at and what comes next, in writing.
